How Many Zip Codes Are Possible Using Five Digits?

There are only two ways to find out how many zip codes are possible using five digits: by looking at the previous example and by counting the number of times it appears in other ZIP codes. In the case of a ZIP+4 code, there are 104 possibilities, meaning that there are 105 total five-digit ZIP codes. In a nutshell, there are 102,250,000 possible five-digit ZIP codes.



The first digit of a ZIP Code is assigned to the city. In order to identify a ZIP Code, the postal service assigns the first two digits to the city or region in question. A country with more than a single ZIP code will have more than one primary city. For this reason, the number of five-digit ZIP codes is limited. While most countries have a large number of 5-digit ZIP codes, Canada's only has one.


There are four ways to find out the number of five-digit ZIP Codes. The first ten digits are assigned from north to south. These ten-digit codes are called "ZIP+4" and are made up of six or nine determinants. These digits are also used to help identify delivery routes. As a result, the last four 'ZIP' digits can change every day.
